Sandown mistake…

So not all went according to plan at Sandown unfortunately…

On my last session of the day (famous last words) I made a mistake at turn 3 and ended up hitting the tyre wall. Luckily the damage was cosmetic, but my ego as well as my arm was a little worse for wear!

The car after the incident:

A friend of mine runs a Carbon Fibre and Fibreglass Bodywork company, working on the likes of the Kerrick Sports Sedans and GT3 Mosler etc. I got the car into him the next day and work began immediately.

We decided that while we were repairing the cracks that I’d caused we may aswell refresh all the bodwork that required it, and respray the front and rear sections as well as all louvres.

I picked up a new dive plane to replace my damaged one, and also a set of clear headlight covers, air jack stands and some protective padding to stop me banging my head on the forward stay constantly.

Work was completed within a matter of weeks. Now all that’s left is a lick of paint and she’ll be better than the day I bought her. An expensive lesson, but the car is all the better for it.

Sandown Test 24th Sep 2011

…so with the car loaded up on the trailer I remembered that the WRX Club of Victoria (http://www.wrx.com.au/) and Skylines Australia (http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/) were holding a track day at Sandown Raceway on the 24th of September, only 2 days away. While Sandown is probably not the ideal place for an SR3, with its long straights and very bumpy track surface, it was nice and close and a good opportunity to test out all the new work on the car without need for track support. If something went wrong I’d just pack it up and go home without too much being lost.

The WRX club were kind enough to accept my very late entry, and off we went!

Few pics below:

The car was running fantastically all day, though with 9 minute sessions and traffic it was hard to get everything up to temp and get a clean lap in. Best lap for the day came on the second session as the track was oiled just prior to then third session, and then passenger laps took place after that. Vid of the quickest lap below:

Much more pace to come…

Success!

Getting the SR3 onto my trailer was always going to be a bit of a mission. The beaver tail and length of the existing ramps wouldn’t stand a chance of allowing me to get it on, so some investigation was necessary.

After tossing up whether to get a new trailer, but deciding against it due to both the cost and the fact that this trailer is fantastic I came across Race Ramps (wwwraceramps.com.au). These are basically super light ramp extensions, and with these included we (by we I mean the guys at race ramps…) worked out that with a combination of my existing ramps and these new TR5 Race Ramps we’d get an approach angle of 4 degrees – perfect!

So I ordered a set and they arrived a few days later. I must say service was excellent – thanks John & Bill!

With much trepidation I took my new race ramps down to GMR with high hopes of getting the Radical onto my trailer.

All was going well until the rub pad (of all things) got caught on the leading edge of the trailer halting anymore progress!

So we wound the jockey, jacked the ramps and voila… success!

This was a great weight lifted off my shoulders. Now I can transport the car myself and this will allow me to get it out on track whenever I feel the urge. Infact, that may be happening sooner rather than later…

ps I know the car is loaded up the wrong way, but it was just a trial run…

Farringdon Beacon has arrived

I can now do some timing! Andrew at Farringdon in the UK has just sent me my new RCA13 Beacon so the steering wheel logger and display should now also tell me my lap times. I’ve been flying blind thus far so it will be very handy indeed.

Great service from Farringdon Instruments too!

Few bits and pieces for the SR3

A package arrived on my desk a few days ago from ol’ blighty containing 3 x pump out leads as well as a custom headlight loom for a friend utilising only the main beams instead of the regular main, dip and indicators. This will save weight and clean up the harness – all very neat indeed.

The pump out leads are utilised for pumping out excess/old fuel after a trip to the track. There is a fitting on the car already:
